Squid Girl Invader Ika Musume! The anime where every episode is a beach episode and the sun is always shining.
The plot goes something like this: a squid girl rises from the ocean, ready to invade Japan and punish all humans for their lack of respect for aquatic business. Surprisingly her plan doesn’t work out, and she ends up living with a family who run a beachside snack bar.
The main character oscillates way out on the weirdness scale with its random squid ink barfing attacks and whatever it is with the Japanese and their obsession with tentacles. But there’s nothing lovecraftian going on; Squid girl will only invade your heart, not devour it.
It’s a lowbrow comedy anime with a peculiar interest in seafood. Any joke to be made about squids will be in there somewhere. Yet somehow it is more than the sum of its parts. It’s an adorable and cheerful mishmash of sunshine and kindhearted people and a proper dose of sealife weirdness. Sure, it’s escapism, but as long as it brightens the day, who cares.
